We demonstrate the operation of a 24 kW-peak-power, 16-picosecond diode-pumped Nd:YVO/sub 4/ passively-mode-locked laser oscillator with the lowest repetition rate (below 1 MHz) ever generated without cavity dumping. Application to fluorescence lifetime imaging measurements is presented.
