We present a general analysis of q-preserving multi-pass cavities (MPC) which can be used in the construction of high-energy and compact ultrashort pulse sources. The application of MPC designs to femtosecond Ti/sup 3+/:Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ lasers is described.
