Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in two counterpropagating focused laser pump beams was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The SRS threshold decrease up to 3-4 times was achieved. Also the pulse compression from 3.3 ns to 25 ps was obtained by SRS in Ba(NO/sub 3/)/sub 2/.
