The age-old system of relating traffic congestion in rapports of meek averages is not competent in today's age and thus Travel time reliability study becomes important for capturing the disturbances in travel time variations. Travel time reliability will help us further in understanding the fluctuations with respect to temporal and spatial dimensions and can also be helpful in designing bus timetables, user information system. In this study, buffer measures are considered for studying the reliability analysis of a selected bus route in Mumbai, India. This study emphasis on analysis and assessment of travel time reliability indices of the selected bus route joining two major cities of Mumbai suburbs viz. Vashi and Kalyan. Various reliability measures such as Buffer Index and Planning Time Index (PTI), and their variation is studied with respect to the period of the day and day of the week. Reliability measures for individual segments of a given bus route are evaluated so as to develop Reliability-based Level of Service (LOS) thresholds. Further, the study also attempts to correlate the effect of different factors such as roadside friction and land use on the bus travel time reliability. The study results are expected to be useful for the selection and consideration of the level of data separation and organizing segment for performance evaluation of any bus route. Also, reliability based LOS thresholds are projected to be used for segment prioritization or complete performance assessment of any given route
