Semiconductor saturable absorbers are monolithically integrated with large area high-index-contrast AlGaAs/Al/sub x/O/sub y/ broadband mirrors. The mirrors are used to self-start and mode-lock a Cr:Forsterite laser generating 30 fs pulses.
