The mode context and motion vectors of the base-layer local macroblocks (MB) are used to estimate the drift when the colocated MBs in the fine granular scalability (FGS) layer are truncated. A parameter called mode-motion-product (MMP) is defined for MBs or 8×8 blocks in the base layer. A novel method for local adaptation of leak factor alpha in adaptive reference FGS (AR-FGS) is proposed based on the derived MMP of the base-layer MB. Experimental results show that the proposed method can obtain an average luminance PSNR gain up to 0.2dB compared to joint video team (JVT)-T062 on the testing conditions specified in JVT-T305.
