Buried channel waveguides were fabricated in Er/sup 3+/-Yb/sup 3+/ co-doped phosphate glasses using focused proton beam irradiation. Net gain of the waveguide amplifiers at 1.534 /spl mu/m wavelength was /spl sim/1.3 dB/cm with 90 mW pump power.
