With the proliferation of more and more complex aircraft equipment within flight simulators, the ARINC 610 report, originally introduced in 1986, was established to support the continuously evolving needs of flight simulation training. This report defined simulator support functions such as flight freeze, repositions, refueling, etc. These simulator functions are not only useful for flight simulator operations but are also useful for avionics test benches. Both simulators and test benches could be used to develop and adjust new avionics features such as the ones required by the future Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. The stringent requirements of the US's Avionics Next Generation (NextGen) Program and its European counterpart Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) Program necessitate an effective way to test avionics systems in an aircraft representative environment. In addition to test benches, flight simulators are also extensively used to test a variety of air traffic scenarios.
