There is an ongoing race in the automotive and tech industry to develop and commercialize autonomous vehicle technologies. Most of the current advancements rely on vehicle onboard sensors and intelligent software algorithms for real-time decision making to support safe and reliable autonomous navigation on a road. Recently, collaborative approaches, with the help of vehicular communication (V2X) are being explored for improving traffic safety. Researchers worldwide are actively working trying to make V2X practically applicable. The goal of this effort is to make driving conditions reliably safe in all weather conditions, at all times of the day and the year. This paper presents the development of a prototype Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) for conveniently displaying V2X safety alerts to the driver. The messages are captured from radio communications between the host vehicle’s on-board-unit (OBU) and remote vehicle’s OBUs or road-side units (RSU). The results are presented at the end to demonstrate the successful implementation of the proposed HMI prototype.
