We report the use of the FEM to calculate the dispersion relation for a 2D photonic crystal lattice in a dielectric slab. Because it is difficult to build periodic structures in three dimensions, the lower dimensional slab structures are preferred and fabricated to demonstrate various types of photonic crystal devices such as a defect cavity laser and waveguide.
