This paper is the result of a two year reliability study of the chopper controlled traction system installed in cars of the Montreal (Metro) subway system. Results confirm the inherent superiority of the chopper control over the conventional cam controlled resistances and also indicate that excellent reliability can be obtained when contactors are replaced by power thyristors. The study has been more benificial than anticipated, to both the equipment manufacturer and the owner, in pinpointing problems and leading to their efficient solution.
