Technological advances over the past two decades have pushed the capacity of optical fiber-based transmission systems into the multi-Gb/s range. The technology that will enable applications requiring Gb/s data transfers is emerging from research labs and being deployed in various gigabit testbeds. This paper reviews recent progress made in understanding the most important issues involved in making gigabit networks and applications widely available.<>
