Full frequency reuse based heterogeneous satellite networks, where the satellite and terrestrial networks transmit on the same sub channel, is proposed. The inter spot beam interference and inter system interference (interference from the terrestrial base station) are the major performance-limiting factors at the satellite user. In this work, a novel approach, where only the dominant interfering signal is mitigated while ignoring the other interfering signals, is proposed. Interference-aware detector is proposed to mitigate the dominant interfering signal. In particular, successive interference canceler and joint decoder based interference mitigation strategies are investigated. The robustness of the joint decoder compared to that of the interference ignorant detector and successive interference canceler is proved through Monte-Carlo simulations.
