The authors present the extension of the l-D analysis of a dielectric waveguide mirror to the 2-D case. To the authors knowledge, this is the first such general analysis which accounts for the full 2-D distribution of the mode incorporating the transverse nature, which was previously neglected, in addition to the lateral. The results show that even above the plane wave critical angle 100% reflectivity is not attained for either the TE or TM mode. In addition, a unique and unusual farfield is predicted. This analysis has a substantial impact for systems which utilize these mirrors, for example, the design of semiconductor ring lasers.
