There have been several interesting developments over the past decade in the area of synchronization of chaotic systems and their use in communications. Laser systems have recently been utilized for communications with irregular waveforms generated at fast time scales. The results of these experiments on erbium doped fiber ring lasers are reviewed. Communication with amplitude, frequency and polarization fluctuations is discussed.
