This paper addresses the energy efficient power allocation issue in massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication systems for both uplink and downlink transmission with circuit power consumption taken into account. The maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and zero-forcing (ZF) detectors in the uplink together with maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) and ZF precoder in the downlink are considered. The key contribution of this paper lies in formulating the original energy efficient power allocation and converting such a complicated optimization problem to a geometric programming problem which can then be solved by a standard optimization software package.
