Development of a compact terra watt (TW) laser system which has a high stability of pointing and output power is expected to create new applications of a short pulse laser in scientific and industrial field of research. We have investigated a cavity configuration of a Ti:sapphire regenerative laser amplifier to amplify a seed pulse with pulse energy of 1 nJ to more than 10 mJ of the pulse energy without damaging optical components in the cavity. The resonator in the regenerative amplifier is made of convex and concave mirror as end mirrors, so that the enlarged mode cross section matches the pump volume in the Ti:sapphire crystal, and additional concave mirror for collimating the beam passing through a Pockels cell in the cavity.
