This paper focuses on characterization of typical traffic loads of multimedia communication systems. It begins with an investigation of the basic concepts relating to load characterization and traffic modeling for multimedia applications. Then we characterize video load sources and present the relevant statistical analyses and studies. On this basis, traffic sources are modeled. As a case study, we investigate transformation of multimedia traffic loads.
