This paper focuses on the failure analysis and the fault tolerant control of an automotive electromagnetic suspension system. The failure analysis classification for a Single-Point Failure (SPF) is presented. Then, a model-based technique for Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) which can be implemented in the suspension is discussed. The model-based FDI consists of suspension fault-modeling, residual generation, and the fault identification. In addition, the step by step suspension system fault-modeling is illustrated. By means of the failure analysis and FDI, a brief overview of fault tolerant strategies in actuators, sensors, and suspension control is presented.
