With the widespread deployment of IEEE 802.11 WLANs and increase in popularity of multimedia communication, video multicast in IEEE 802.11 WLANs has received much attention. One of the most challenging issues in video multicast is to reduce energy consumption of receivers while guaranteeing stable video quality to users. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective video multicast system which reduces energy consumption of receivers by exploiting power saving mode of IEEE 802.11 and scalable video coding (SVC). In the system, the enhancement layer (EL) of SVC-encoded video can be selectively transmitted via unicast transmission at the MAC layer for energy saving of battery-powered receivers. Our experimental results show that the proposed system provides energy-efficient streaming for SVC-encoded video.
