A systematic numerical algorithm is proposed for the planning and optimization of wireless communication network in urban rail transportation. The algorithm is based on a few statistical wireless channel parameters which are relatively easy to obtain. In this method, the performance of the wireless communication network can be dynamically evaluated via simulation while adjusting base stations' positions in a WYSWYG way. Also, transportation management information, such as the dynamic train speed, the online number of vehicles and the daily operating time, are taken into consideration in calculating the performance of wireless communication network. Further, a numerical multi-object optimization method is described to calculate the optimal network planning under different restrictions. Both the simulations performed in a lab using real wireless communication equipment and the project of Communication Based Train Control lately tested in Beijing metro line 8 have shown the effectiveness of this method.
