Shipbuilding projects are gaining in complexity and volume. To face this demand shipyards tend to share work content and constitute shipbuilding networks. The paper describes an approach to design these project specific shipbuilding networks. The approach focusses on the idea of evolving core competences for each shipyard in the network. Implementation of competence profiles for shipyards combined with profiles of capacity demand for shipbuilding projects enable to reveal deficits in a shipbuilding network and deduce possible adjustments. To evaluate network configurations and possible adjustments considering the dynamic production sequence in shipbuilding, a simulation model for shipbuilding networks is introduced.
