The number of actuators in passenger cars is rising constantly which is mainly due to an increasing number of driver assistance and safety systems as well as changing expectations of driving comfort. Especially in terms of vehicle acoustics, various dynamic actuators are already used for sound and vibration excitation for different vibro-acoustical applications in a vehicle. Against the background of the ongoing introduction of alternative drivetrain concepts (e.g. electric or hybrid drive) which are less dominant from an acoustical point of view as well as new legislations for exterior noise of electrical driven cars, the trend towards an active sound generation will continue in the next years. This contribution gives a summary of state of the art technologies for structure-borne and airborne sound generation in terms of interior and exterior noise of a car and points out potentials of innovative structurally integrated piezoelectric actuators for replacing the current actuator principles. The first example is a typical sound design application for the interior noise of a car based on loudspeakers or structure-borne sound generators which is used to design a brand- or vehicle-specific driving sound. Further on, an alternative approach for well-known infotainment applications in the car like music and speech is presented which is based on the excitation of vehicle interior components using piezoelectric actuators. This idea can be also used for exterior noise generation which is getting more important for electric cars in the future. At the end, an active vibration control system which has been implemented in a rear axle is presented. The system is able to reduce the disturbing noise of the gear box like gear whine by influencing the structure-borne noise on the transfer path from the gear mesh to the driver´s ear using a piezoelectric patch actuator. At the end, the advantages of structurally integrated piezoelectric actuators for structure-borne and airborne sound generation in vehicle applications are summarized and challenges for successful vehicle integration are pointed out.
