Disclosed herein is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is provided which includes a radioactive fuel source, and an external combustion engine powered by said radioactive fuel source. The external combustion engine is selected from the group consisting of Stirling Cycle engines and Ericsson Cycle engines, and further operates in at least one cycle selected from the group consisting of isothermal cycles and isobaric cycles.
