A brake system includes a master cylinder operable during a backup braking mode to generate brake actuating pressure for hydraulically actuating first and second pairs of wheel brakes. A single-acting plunger (“SAP”) assembly is operable during a normal non-failure braking mode to generate brake actuating pressure for hydraulically actuating at least one of the first and second pairs of wheel brakes. First and second two-position three-way valves are interposed hydraulically between the master cylinder, the SAP assembly, and a corresponding pair of wheel brakes for selectively providing pressurized hydraulic fluid from the master cylinder and/or the SAP assembly to the corresponding pair of wheel brakes. A secondary brake module selectively provides pressurized hydraulic fluid for actuating the first and second pairs of wheel brakes in at least one of a normal non-failure braking mode and a backup braking mode.
