Systems and methods are provided for performing carriageway chopping in a mapping structure using algorithms to select a lane connector of a first lane of a carriageway. The lane connector may be evaluated to determine a face and a heading of the lane connector. The heading and face of the lane connector may be used to determine a candidate slice of the lane connector. The systems and method may determine a second candidate slice of a second lane connector of a second lane of the carriageway wherein the second lane connector is adjacent to the lane connector. The systems and method may align the candidate slices of adjacent lane connectors when the candidate slices are within a distance threshold of each other. The systems and method may chop the carriageway at the aligned candidate slices to generate carriageway links between two chops of the carriageway.
