A method of performing diagnostics in a hierarchical diagnostics electrical architecture of a vehicle, the vehicle comprising a plurality of on-board computing devices for hosting the hierarchical diagnostics electrical architecture. The hierarchical diagnostics electrical architecture comprising: a component diagnostic layer having a plurality of electronic control units each comprising a diagnostics server module; and at least one supervisory diagnostic layer. The method comprising: receiving into the diagnostics server modules sensor output data from one or more on-board vehicle sensors; performing, by the diagnostics server modules, one or more diagnostic tasks based on the received sensor output data to generate one or more component-level diagnostic notifications; receiving into the at least one supervisory layer the component-level diagnostic notifications from each of a group of the plurality of electronic control units; and aggregating in the at least one supervisory layer the received component-level diagnostic notifications to generate a supervisory-level diagnostic notification.
