The invention relates to a method for operating an ultrasonic sensor device (3) for a motor vehicle (1), with which an ultrasonic signal is emitted into a ground area (5) below the motor vehicle (1) and an ultrasonic signal from the ground area (5) is received and an object (6) in the ground area (5) is detected by means of a control unit (10) on the basis of the emitted and/or the received ultrasonic signals, wherein the ultrasonic signal is emitted by a first ultrasonic sensor (4a) of the ultrasonic sensor device (3) and the ultrasonic signal emitted by the first ultrasonic sensor (4a) and reflected at a road surface (9) in the ground area (5) is received by a second ultrasonic sensor (4b) of the ultrasonic sensor device (3) and the object (6) is detected by the control unit (10) on the basis of a proportion of the ultrasonic signal that is received by the second ultrasonic sensor (4b).
