The invention is intended for use in devices for deploying spikes (ground-engaging members) so as to extend beyond the bearing surfaces of such items as footwear soles, walking stick tips and other walking accessories, pneumatic tyres, caterpillar tracks and road surface-contacting elements of other forms of propulsion, for preventing slipping and for maintaining a desired position or direction of movement. A method for deploying a spike by the rotation thereof is characterized in that the axis about which the spike is rotated is situated at an angle to the plane of the bearing surface. In addition, the spike can be rotated about a spiral axis. A device for deploying a spike by the rotation thereof is characterized in that the axis about which the spike is rotated is situated at an angle of 45 degrees to the plane of the bearing surface, the spike has a tapered tip and the angle of taper of the tip of the spike relative to the axis about which the spike is rotated is equal to the angle of incline of said axis relative to the plane of the bearing surface. The technical result of the invention is that of reducing the height of the spike deployment device while maintaining the efficacy, performance and durability thereof.
