An aircraft engine (10), an electric taxi system (50) and a corresponding method are provided to facilitate taxiing without operation of the core gas turbine engine (11) by driving the fan assembly (13) with the electric taxi system (50) during taxi operations. An aircraft engine is provided that includes a core gas turbine engine (11) including a compressor (12), a combustor (14) and a high pressure turbine (16). The aircraft engine also includes a fan assembly (13) coupled to the core gas turbine engine (11). The aircraft engine further includes an electric taxi system (50) coupled to the fan assembly (13). The electric taxi system (50) includes an energy storage device (52) and a motor (54) responsive to energy provided by the energy storage device (52). The motor (54) is coupled to the fan assembly (13) and is configured to drive the fan assembly (13) during taxi operations.
