The present invention relates to navigation of a multi-directional stop intersection by an autonomous vehicle. A subject matter described herein relates to a system for operating the autonomous vehicle (AV) at the multi-directional stop intersection and a technology. After detecting that the AV is at a primary stop line of the multi-directional stop intersection, a planned movement path through the multi-directional stop intersection is obtained. If the planned movement path of the AV through the multi-directional stop intersection meets equal to or more than one set of separation distance criteria, the AV proceeds beyond the primary stop line. The separation distance criteria include criteria which are met in response to detecting that the AV is separated enough to safely merge into a movement lane corresponding to the planned movement path. The system of the present invention comprises: equal to or more than one computer processor; and equal to or more than one non-transitory storage medium.
