The present invention relates to a method of operating a membrane-type liquefied hydrogen storage tank, wherein a membrane-type liquefied hydrogen storage tank with a divided internal space comprises: a storage space in which a secondary barrier and a primary barrier made of metal are sequentially stacked on an inner wall of a hull and liquefied hydrogen is stored; a primary insulation space formed between the primary barrier and the secondary barrier; and a secondary insulation space formed between the secondary barrier and the hull. The method of operating the membrane-type liquefied hydrogen storage tank comprises: a vacuum forming step of forming vacuum in the storage space, the primary insulation space, and the secondary insulation space; a liquefied hydrogen shipping step of loading liquefied hydrogen into the storage space; and a helium gas injection step of injecting helium gas as inert gas into the primary insulation space and the secondary insulation space.
