To provide a metal composite material that has an excellent rigidity in comparison with conventional technologies even including an adhesive layer.SOLUTION: According to a metal composite material 10 of the present invention, a thickness h1 of a thin steel sheet 1 and a thickness h2 of a low specific gravity sheet 2 are set so as to satisfy a formula that represents a preset bending rigidity [D] of the metal composite material 10. Moreover, a method for producing a metal composite material includes: a step for preparing the thin steel sheet and the low specific gravity sheet; and a step for joining the thin steel sheet and the low specific gravity sheet with each other via an adhesive layer 3 therebetween. The step for joining the thin steel sheet and the low specific gravity sheet with each other is carried out in such a way that a neutral axis when the metal composite material is bent and deformed is set to be within the adhesive layer that has a lower strength than those of the thin steel sheet and the low specific gravity sheet.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
