To provide a rack shaft and a steering gear unit that make it easy to secure durability.SOLUTION: A rack portion 15 includes: a plurality of rack teeth 17 provided at one position in a circumferential direction of an outer peripheral surface; to-be-pressed surfaces 19a, 19b provided on a portion of the outer peripheral surface and configured to be brought into contact with a rack guide in use, the portion being positioned substantially opposite to a portion where the plurality of rack teeth 17 are provided in a radial direction of the outer peripheral surface; an oil holding recessed portion 20 provided in a portion of the outer peripheral surface in which the plurality of rack teeth 17 are provided and which is deviated from the to-be-pressed surfaces 19a, 19b in the circumferential direction, the portion being positioned above the portion in which the plurality of rack teeth 17 are provided and/or the to-be-pressed surfaces 19a, 19b in use. At least a part of the oil holding recessed portion 20 is open to a portion deviated from a portion facing the rack guide in the radial direction.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
