To provide a method for separating more homogeneous fractions of a particulate carbonaceous material, a material obtained by the method, and uses thereof.SOLUTION: Provided is a method for separating a particulate carbonaceous material obtained by hydrothermal carbonization or precipitation of an organic material into at least two fractions, wherein the STSA surface area of the particulate carbonaceous material is at least 5 m2/g, the first fraction has a STSA surface area greater than the STSA surface area of the particulate carbonaceous material and the second fraction has a STSA surface area less than the STSA surface area of the particulate carbon starting material, and gravity separation of the particulate carbonaceous material is included, and wherein the gravity separation is carried out in an air classifier or a powder separator performed in liquid or gas phase.SELECTED DRAWING: None
