To provide a rack gear which enables smooth shift from a state where a pinion gear is separated from the rack gear to an engagement state.SOLUTION: The size of the tooth positioned on the end of the tooth row of the rack gear is smaller than the size of the tooth positioned at the center of the tooth row. The tooth positioned at the end of the tooth row of the rack gear is represented by an end tooth, and the tooth positioned at the center of the tooth row are represented by a normal tooth. The end tooth of the rack gear is made small, and thereby the pinion gear reaching the end of the rack gear from a separated position is easily engaged with the end tooth. The size of the next tooth positioned adjacent to the end tooth is preferably larger than the end tooth and smaller than the normal tooth. The end teeth, the next teeth and the normal teeth are made gradually larger in this order, and thereby the pinion gear can be smoothly engaged with the rack gear while being moved from the end tooth to the normal tooth.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
