To provide a vehicle power supply system and a method for controlling a vehicle power supply system capable of preventing a situation where an output-limited state is canceled during a backup state.SOLUTION: A vehicle power supply system includes a power supply control device and a steering control device. A power supply control section executes: processing for detecting a state change of a main power supply; and processing for switching a connection state of a driving circuit to the main power supply and an auxiliary power supply. The processing for switching the connection state includes: processing for switching the connection state so that a backup state is brought about as a voltage decrease of the main power supply occurs; and processing for switching the connection state so that a transition to a normal state is made as the voltage decrease of the main power supply is resolved. After the voltage decrease of the main power supply occurs, a turning control section of the steering control device sets an output-limited state in which torque capable of being output by a turning-side motor is limited. The output-limited state is canceled after the switching of the connection state is completed by the power supply control section so that the transition to the normal state is made as the voltage decrease of the main power supply is resolved.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 9
