To provide a method for assembling a hub unit bearing and the hub unit bearing that facilitate work to assemble tapered rollers to a retainer even if the retainer is so configured that the tapered rollers never fall with respect to the hub unit bearing which uses the tapered rollers as rolling elements.SOLUTION: In a fall preventive retainer 20a, a radially inner opening of a pocket 24 is located on an inner diameter side of an axis of rotation of a tapered roller 4a at least at a longitudinally intermediate position of the tapered roller 4a, and a circumferential width thereof is smaller than a diameter of the tapered roller 4a; and a radially outer opening of the pocket 24 is located on an outer diameter side of the axis of rotation of the tapered roller 4a over an entire longitudinal region of the tapered roller 4a and a circumferential width thereof is smaller than the diameter of the tapered roller 4a, and the circumferential width of the radially outer opening of the pocket 24 is smaller than the circumferential width of the radially inner opening of the pocket 24.
