To provide an eddy current-type braking device for an elevator apparatus capable of obtaining sufficient braking force.SOLUTION: An eddy current-type braking device 10, which is attached to an elevator car or to a counterweight moving along a guide rail 8 extending vertically, comprises a magnet unit 11 and an operative mechanism 30. The magnet unit 11 includes at lest one magnet 13. The operative mechanism 30 moves the magnet unit 11 between an actuated position that approaches the guide rail 8 and activates a brake, and a non-actuated position farther away from the guide rail 8 than the actuated position.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
