A light modulator 51 modulates illumination light incident from the light source element 60 to emit as display light. A focusing optical system focuses illumination light emitted from different partial areas D toward different areas in an eye box for each display light modulated by the light modulator 51, and, in reducing the brightness of a virtual image, executes 1) emission area expansion processing of expanding an emission area DM from a first emission area DM1 to a second emission area DM2, and (2) optical intensity reduction processing of reducing the optical intensity of at least part of the first emission area DM1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 12
