To provide an optical system that enables an occupant to visually recognize a reflection image formed in a vehicle windshield as a virtual display, can make reduction in glaring and visual recognition of a crisp HUD video compatible with each other, the reduction in glaring being caused by reflection light such as sunlight and the like on a road surface or water surface.SOLUTION: An optical system is provided, including a head-up display device which is mounted on a mobile object, and makes an occupant in the mobile object visually recognize a virtual image which is based on a reflection image in a projection unit of S polarization, the head-up display device comprises: a video display instrument which emits projection light composed of the S polarization; and a projection unit where the projection light is projected. The projection unit comprises: a first glass plate which is arranged on an incidence side of the projection light; a second glass plate which is arranged on an emission side of the projection light; and an azimuth rotator layer which makes linear polarization incident upon the projection unit rotate at 90°. In the optical system, a filter cutting off P polarization is arranged between the projection unit and the passenger and on an optical path of road surface reflection light which is reflected from a road surface and is made incident upon the mobile object through the projection unit.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
