To prevent an occupant from experiencing discomfort caused by noise associated with operating an engine in a series hybrid vehicle.SOLUTION: An engine control method to set a starting threshold that is a threshold of a required output to start the engine includes: a background noise state determination step for determining whether it is a high background noise state where a vehicular background noise is relatively large or a low background noise state where the vehicular background noise is relatively small; and a start-stop threshold setup step for setting the starting threshold in accordance with the state of the vehicular background noise. Further, in the start-stop threshold setup step, in a case where the vehicular background noise is determined to be the high background noise state, the starting threshold is set at a relatively small first starting threshold or a stopping threshold is set at a relatively small first stopping threshold, whereas in a case where the vehicular background noise is determined to be the low background noise state, the starting threshold is set at a relatively large second starting threshold or the stopping threshold is set at a relatively large second stopping threshold.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2

    【課題】シリーズハイブリッド型車両において、エンジンの作動に伴う騒音によって乗員に不快感を与えることを抑制する。【解決手段】エンジンを始動させるための要求出力の閾値である始動閾値を設定するエンジン制御方法であって、車両の暗騒音が相対的に大きい高暗騒音状態であるか相対的に小さい低暗騒音状態であるかを判定する暗騒音状態判定工程と、車両の暗騒音の状態に応じて始動閾値を設定する始動/停止閾値設定工程と、を含み、始動/停止閾値設定工程では、車両の暗騒音が高暗騒音状態であると判断された場合には、始動閾値を相対的に小さい第1始動閾値に設定するか停止閾値を相対的に小さい第1停止閾値に設定し、車両の暗騒音が低暗騒音状態であると判断された場合には、始動閾値を相対的に大きい第2始動閾値に設定するか、停止閾値を相対的に大きい第2停止閾値に設定する。【選択図】図2
