To allow a reactor to transition to a critical state after staying in a subcritical state for a required period without using an external device.SOLUTION: A poison-added reactor core 10 according to an embodiment comprises: a fuel element 11 comprising a fuel substance containing a fissile nuclide, and a poison including a neutron-absorbing nuclide that turns into another neutron-absorbing nuclide through natural decay and has a neutron absorption cross-section greater than that of the another neutron-absorbing nuclide; and a solid moderator unit 12 containing a moderator for moderating neutrons. The poison-added reactor core 10 is initially in a subcritical state without addition of negative reactivity from outside. The neutron-absorbing nuclide may be at least one of europium 152, europium 154, gadolinium 153, and dysprosium 159.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
