To enable opening/closing timing of an exhaust valve and a suction valve to be set freely, to make a volume change amount of an air chamber in a compression stroke larger than that in an expansion stroke, to obtain large braking force.SOLUTION: In a process of compressing air sucked into an air chamber through a suction valve and discharging it from an exhaust valve, a compression/expansion engine obtains braking torque by compressing and expanding the air. The compression/expansion engine sets an amount of change in the volume of the air chamber from the closing of the suction valve to the opening of the exhaust valve to be larger than an amount of change in the volume of the air chamber from the closing of the exhaust valve to the opening of the suction valve.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
