To provide a virtual image display unit that can prevent an increase in temperature of an image forming unit while preventing a reduction in display quality of a virtual image.SOLUTION: A head up display (HUD) as a virtual image display unit projects an image on a projection unit to display the image as a virtual image. The HUD comprises: a liquid crystal panel 28 that forms an image; a light source unit 23 that supplies light source light; and a reflector 25 that reflects part of the light source light 23 on a partial reflection surface 25a and transmits at least the other part of the light source light. The reflector 25 has the partial reflection surface 25a that is inclined to establish the relationship of the Brewster angle with respect to a principal ray of the light source light from the light source unit 23, on an illumination optical path OP1 that extends for the light source unit 23 to illuminate the liquid crystal panel 28 with the light source light.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2

    【課題】虚像の表示品位の低下を抑制しつつ、画像形成部の温度上昇を抑制することが可能な虚像表示装置を提供する。【解決手段】虚像表示装置としてのHUDは、画像を投影部へ投影することにより、当該画像を虚像表示する。HUDは、画像を形成する液晶パネル28と、光源光を供給する光源部23と、光源光23を部分反射面25aにて一部反射し、光源光の他の少なくとも一部を透過させる反射体25と、を備える。反射体25は、光源部23からの光源光の主光線に対してブリュースター角の関係を成立させるように傾斜した部分反射面25aを、光源部23が光源光により液晶パネル28を照明するまでの照明光路OP1上に有する。【選択図】図2
