To provide a method of detecting a circumferential main groove and a device for detecting a circumferential main groove each of which enables a position of the circumferential main groove formed in a tire to be detected by a simple method.SOLUTION: The method of detecting a circumferential main groove is provided for detecting a position of the circumferential main groove of a tire on the basis of 3D data of the tread surface of the tire using a computer. This method includes: a cross-sectional data extracting step of extracting the cross-sectional data of the tread surface along one direction inclined with respect to the tire circumferential direction at a plurality of positions in the tire circumferential direction; a region dividing step of dividing each of the cross-sectional data into a plurality of regions along one direction; an evaluation step of evaluating the relative unevenness in the region; and a circumferential main groove identifying step of superposing the evaluation results of the divided regions which are the same position in the tire circumferential direction and identifying the position of the circumferential main groove of the tire.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
