The light emitting side device includes a light emitting unit, and the light receiving side device includes: a plurality of first light receiving elements; a plurality of second light receiving elements arranged above the plurality of first light receiving elements; and a detection unit which detects that an object has passed between the light emitting side device and the light receiving side device based on the light receiving results of the plurality of first light receiving elements, and detects a length of the object based on the light receiving results of the plurality of second light receiving elements. The detection unit operates in a retracted mode which detects the passage of the object by using the light receiving result of at least a part of the second light receiving elements instead of the light receiving result of a stop element, when a predetermined number or more of the first light receiving elements become stop elements which are kept in a light-shielding state for a longer time than a predetermined stop period.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
