To detect such an abnormal state as to exert defect of braking force without setting up a specified sensor when generating a braking force by using functional fluid such as MR fluid.SOLUTION: A braking force is generated in accordance with a magnetic field to be applied onto functional fluid such as MR fluid 14 which is filled in a space 13 between a rotary member 12 and a fixed member 11. An abnormality detection part detects a change of inductance on an electric coil 15 for applying a magnetic field 16 for the functional fluid in order to detect a defect of the braking force. The inductance is lowered when capacity of the filled functional fluid is reduced and aggregation of particles which are dispersed in the functional fluid is produced and, therefore, the lowering thereof is detected as abnormality. A change of electric current responsiveness with respect to step-shaped voltage change or impedance is detected as a change of impedance for an alternating current signal.     【課題】MR流体のような機能性流体を用いて制動力を発生する場合に、制動力の失陥に影響を及ぼす異常な状態を、特別なセンサを設置することなく検出すること。【解決手段】回転部材12と固定部材11との間の空間13に充填したMR流体14等の機能性流体に印加する磁場により制動力を発生する。制動力の失陥を検知するために、前記機能性流体に対して磁界16を印加する電気コイル15におけるインダクタンスの変化を異常検知部が検知する。充填された機能性流体の容量が減少したり、機能性流体中に分散している粒子の凝集などが発生した場合にはインダクタンスが低下するので、それを異常として検知する。ステップ状の電圧変化に対する電流応答特性の変化、又は交流信号に対するインピーダンスの変化として、インダクタンスを検知する。温度変化を補正する。【選択図】図1
