To provide a steel plate member having excellent impact absorption characteristics while being of a simple and compact structure, and a manufacturing method therefor.SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing a steel plate member comprises the step of: forming at least a pair of strip-like grooves 12 lying opposite each other on opposite surfaces of a plate-like steel plate 11; heating the steel plate 11 with the strip-like grooves 12 formed therein to a higher temperature than a transformation completion temperature A3; and cooling the heated steel plate 11 while press-molding it between an upper die 31 and a lower die 32. In the step of forming the strip-like groove 12, the strip-like groove 12 extends in a direction crossing a longer direction (a y-axis direction) of the steel plate 11. In the step of cooling the heated steel plate while press-molding it, a clearance is formed between each one of the upper die 31 and the lower die 32 and a bottom of the strip-like groove 12.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
