To provide a navigation and control system including one or more position sensors which are so configured as to generate a position signal which indicates a position and a direction of travel of a vehicle.SOLUTION: This system includes one or more operation control mechanisms which have input and generate output for controlling vehicle operation, and includes a built-in autonomous controller separated from the operation control mechanism. The autonomous controller includes: a processor which receives the position signal from the position sensor, and is so configured as to generate an operation control signal which determines an updated travel path of a vehicle; and a programmable interface which performs communication among the position sensor, the operation control mechanism, and the processor. The programmable interface is so configured to normalize input from the position sensor to the processor, and to generate an adaptable operation control signal which is added as input to the operation control mechanism, whereby the built-in autonomous controller can be configured so as to operate together with various different sensors and different operation control mechanisms.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
